Original prompt: Which topic or assignment on interprofessional collaboration did you find to be beneficial? How did it help develop your leadership potential as an advanced practice nurse with a DNP degree?
” Nurses with a DNP qualification have the capacity to work in different settings. However, a significant majority of the DNP nurses practice as clinicians, researchers, and educators in the academic field. When practicing in healthcare settings, these nurses perform critical roles as leaders in the healthcare continuum (Tenhunen et al., 2019). According to Beerber et al. (2019), DNP-prepared nurses possess essential skills that have a notable effect on nursing leadership, health policies, evaluation of evidence-based practice, and clinical practice. While the current number of DNP nurses in the clinical practice is relatively low, projections indicate that many qualified nurses will join and lead teams to deliver quality care to patients. As a practicing nurse, I cherish the opportunity to contribute to safe and quality patient care. I am confident that the course has been critical in enhancing my leadership qualities for suitable practice in clinical settings. As discussed in the previous post, with the gained skills and knowledge, I will lead collaborative teams to search for evidence and develop evidence-informed protocols to enhance clinical practice (Moirano et al., 2020). Indeed, evidence suggests that nurses play critical roles in primary healthcare, including diagnosing and referring patients, especially in remote areas where the availability of health care professionals is scarce. I believe that with the DNP qualification, I will have acquired the necessary skills to lead nurses and other healthcare providers to realize the desired clinical outcomes. As it was demonstrated in the collaboration to reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers, the chief nursing officer led the team to develop and implement a protocol to curb the high prevalence of pressure ulcers. By leading the team, it demonstrated that nurses had acquired the skills and expertise to perform critical functions in the healthcare system.Nurses with a DNP qualification carry out the roles of advanced practice nurses in leadership positions. The assignment has helped me develop critical leadership skills that will help teams achieve their goals. For instance, I learned that in leading teams, it is essential to have a common approach by allowing all members to have an equal voice in essential decision-making processes. In this case, the team members participated in searching for evidence and appraising the said evidence to identify the most relevant and current practices to reduce pressure ulcers. The leader assigned each member specific duties and respected their ability to deliver on the duties. The leader also encouraged an open-communication policy that is critical in genuinely presenting ideas even when they differ from the majority. With such an approach, members felt part of the team, and the decisions arrived at were informed by the common wisdom of the group. I will utilize these skills in my future endeavors to ensure that teams under my leadership can meet objectives.ReferencesBeeber, A. S., Palmer, C., Waldrop, J., Lynn, M. R., & Jones, C. B. (2019).
