“What’s the Case?”
In the early 1990s there was an epidemic among livestock in New England. There were approximately 170,000 cattle found to have “mad cow disease”, so name because the condition attacks the central nervous system, which leads to bizarre behavioral symptoms and often death. The disease appears to have been caused by an “unconventional transmissible agent,” meaning it is unlike most organisms. No genetic material has ever been detected from this organism in infected tissues, although there are foreign protein fibers that accumulate in aggregate in the brain. Infected cows were still turning up in the late 1990s to early 2000s.
There was a great panic in the late 90s when dozens of humans started turning up with symptoms similar to those seen in the cows in the early 90s. More than 40 people have been diagnosed with the human variant of mad cow disease. There seems to be consistency with the approximate 10-year incubation period for this unconventional, transmissible agent. In 1996 scientists confirmed that the same agent was present in affected human and cow brains. (can be referenced in Chp 6 of text).
What is the name noted for a transmissible agent that is acellular, but contain protein and no genetic material? What is the formal name noted for “mad cow disease”? Fully Explain the meaning of that formal name. There is a human form of the disease, but it is called something else. What is that?Scientists have long suspected that the humans who were infected during this outbreak acquired the disease from eating meat from diseased animals. Even when meat is well cooked, it can transmit the infection. What does this ability to still transmit, say about the infectious agent?
