Building upon Lectures and Readings, as well as your own additional research and review of academic and policy literature, students will submit a 10-12 page (maximum 3000 word) summary of various approaches to how the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has been implemented in Canada and beyond – i.e. within research; education; social work; health; recreation; or youth justice settings.Your summary will include ***sub-sections on UNCRC development and history, its core principles and provisions, distinctions between types of UN treaties such as a Declaration and a Convention, additional obligations for States who sign and ratify the CRC, and key recommendations the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child provided as feedback to Canada during two out of three [1995; 2003; 2012] UN documents entitled Concluding Observations on Canada – Consideration of reports submitted by States parties under article 44 of the Convention issued since federal ratification (copies of these documents will be provided on our Sakai site). “A” papers will include a minimum of 15 (minimum x15) recent citations from 2008 onwards *** each from beyond our own Lectures and Readings.Finally, a section discussing four different Articles of **provision from the UNCRC i.e. **services that are provided to young people [as distinct from the four core **principles of the treaty]. These four services or **provisions may be related to any disciplinary or professional practice with Canadian children and young people. In this discussion, you must also include some **critical reflection on any potential challenges you might experience in your choice of professional setting – i.e. education, juvenile justice, counselling, social work, recreation, out-of-home care provision, or the broad, general and emerging field of child and youth care practice.Papers will be graded upon appropriate academic style with accurate spelling, coherent correct grammar, logical and congruent organization along with sub-headings, thoroughness of your discussion responses, an Abstract, and APA-style referencing for all supporting literature.
